The Government has decided to implement the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transport (KVMRT) project to improve the public transport ridership and ease the urban traffic congestions.Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd.(SPNB) has been appointed as the asset and project owner for the Project. The first line to be implemented is the stretch from Sg.Buloh to Kajang (SBK), estimated to cost about RM 18 to 20 billion. The SBK line is 51km long, with 41.5km elevated and 9. 5km underground. There will be a total of 31 stations, out of which 7 are underground .16nos. Park & Ride facilities with multi level car parks are proposed. Some of the stations are proposed to be integrated with existing stations of KTMB, ERL, LRT, and Monorail via interchanges.

The underground portion consists of twin tunnels , 5.8m internal diameter .The tunnels are formed by using TBM’s whilst the underground stations are by cut & cover method. The underground stretch traverses through Kenny Hill and KL Limestone formations over the northern half and southern half respectively . The KL Limestone is karstic in nature and is expected to pose a major challenge for both the tunneling works and the station works.

The design works for the SBK line are ongoing and the main construction works are scheduled to commence early 2012 . The targeted completion and opening of the SBK line is early 2017 . SPNB has appointed MMC – Gamuda as their Project Delivery Partner (PDP), who would be responsible for the planning, design, procurement, construction, integration, testing and commissioning and eventual handover of the project to SPNB.
